The Ego is like Dutch Elm Disease for the Soul. But it's far worse and more pernicious than any fungal infection, as much as the Ego tenaciously clings to its hosts' body the host's infected mind clings to the Ego. Ego is an affliction and an addiction. The victim says that he wants to give it up but finds himself indulging in it time and again. For this reason, St. Paul declared himself a "wretched man".

Develop a sense of when the Ego is operating and have choice whether to follow it. Until you become conscious of the Ego and rightfully develop a disgust at its falsity you will never be free of it. The Ego is the Number 1 reason why the spiritual seeker can never successfully meditate or apply any teaching or technique in a fully effective way.
