Kabir ♥

Having crossed the river,
where will you go, O friend ?

There's no road to tread,
No traveler ahead,
Neither a beginning, nor an end.

There's no water, no boat, no boatman, no cord;
No earth is there, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford.

You have forgotten the Self within,
Your search in the void will be in vain;
In a moment the life will ebb
And in this body you won't remain.

Be ever conscious of this, O friend,
You've to immerse within your Self;
Kabir says, salvation you won't then need,
For what you are, you would be indeed.

Abode of the Beloved
Oh Companion That Abode Is Unmatched,
Where My Complete Beloved Is.

In that Place There Is No Happiness or Unhappiness,
No Truth or Untruth
Neither Sin Nor Virtue.
There Is No Day or Night, No Moon or Sun,
There Is Radiance Without Light.

There Is No Knowledge or Meditation
No Repetition of Mantra or Austerities,
Neither Speech Coming From Vedas or Books.
Doing, Not-Doing, Holding, Leaving
All These Are All Lost Too In This Place.

No Home, No Homeless, Neither Outside or Inside,
Micro and Macrocosm Are Non-Existent.
Five Elemental Constituents and the Trinity Are Both Not There
Witnessing Un-struck Shabad Sound is Also Not There.

No Root or Flower, Neither Branch or Seed,
Without a Tree Fruits are Adorning,
Primordial Om Sound, Breath-Synchronized Soham,
This and That - All Are Absent, The Breath Too Unknown

Where the Beloved Is There is Utterly Nothing
Says Kabir I Have Come To Realize.
Whoever Sees My Indicative Sign
Will Accomplish the Goal of Liberation.

Friend, please tell me what I can do about this mud world
I keep spinning out of myself!

I gave up expensive clothes, and bought a robe
But I noticed one day the cloth was well-woven.

So I bought some burlap, but I still
Throw it elegantly over my left shoulder.

I stopped being a sexual elephant,
And now I discover that I"m angry a lot.

I finally gave up anger, and now I notice
That I am greedy all day.

I worked hard at dissolving the greed,
And now I am proud of myself.

When the mind wants to break its link with the world
It still holds on to one thing.

Kabir says: Listen, my friend,
There are very few that find the path!!

♥ Kabir

The bhakti path...

The bhakti path winds in a delicate way.
On this path there is no asking and no not asking.
The ego simply disappears the moment you touch
  him.
The joy of looking for him is so immense that you
just dive in,
and coast around like a fish in the water.
If anyone needs a head, the lover leaps up to offer
his.
Kabir's poems touch on the secrets of this bhakti.

I said to the wanting-creature inside me:
What is this river you want to cross?
There are no travelers on the river-road, and no road.
Do you see anyone moving about on that bank, or resting?

There is no river at all, and no boat, and no boatman.
There is no tow rope either, and no one to pull it.
There is no ground, no sky, no time, no bank, no ford!

And there is no body, and no mind!
Do you believe there is some place that will make the
soul less thirsty?
In that great absence you will find nothing.

Be strong then, and enter into your own body;
there you have a solid place for your feet.
Think about it carefully!
Don't go off somewhere else!

Kabir says this: just throw away all thoughts of
imaginary things,
and stand firm in that which you are.

Maya, I know her illusory power,
Maya, to be a great thug;
Her hands sway,holding a web-like trap,
She speaks in sweet voice;
For Kesava(the sustainer)she’s seated
as embodiment-of-abundance,
For Shiva(God of dissolution)
she’s Empress-of-worlds;
For priest she is idol of worship,
in places of pilgrimage
She manifests as holy water;
For yogis she’s a spiritual partner,
In king's palace she’s the queen;
For some she’s seated as priceless diamond,
For some she’s a mere penny;
For devotees she’s seated in object of devotion,
For Brahma she’s his companion;
says Kabir, listen oh practicing aspirant,
All this is an untold story!

Maya maha thugni hum jani;
tirgun phans liye kar dole,
bole madhuri bani;
Kesav ke Kamla ve baithi,
Shiv ki bhavan Bhavani;
punda ke murat ve baithi,
tirath mein bhai pani;
yogi ke yogin ve baithi,
raja ke ghar rani;
kahu ke hira ve baithi,
kahu ke kodi kani;
bhaktan ke bhaktin ve baithi,
Brahma ke brahmani;
kahe Kabir suno bhai sadho,
yeh sab akath kahani!

Ignorance is a phantom

An American lady, a theosophist, asked: What is the means by which my approach to my master may be made nearer?

M.: How far away are you now from him?

D.: I am away from him. But I want to get closer to him.

M.: If you first know your Self, you may then find out how far away the other is. Who are you now? Are you the personality?
D.: Yes, I am the personality.

M.: Is the personality independent of the Self?
D.: Sometimes.

M.: At what times?
D.: I mean I have some flashes of the reality and, at other times, I do not have them.

M.: Who is aware of those flashes?
D.: I, I mean my personality.

M.: Is this personality aware as being apart from the Self?
D.: Which Self?
M.: Which do you consider the personality to be?
D.: The lower self.
M.: Then I mean to ask if the lower self is aware independently of the Higher Self?

D.: Yes, at times.
M.: Who feels that she is away from the master, just now?
D.: The Higher Self.

M.: Does the Higher Self have a body and say that the master is away from it? Does it speak through your mouth? Are you apart from that?

D.: Can you kindly advise me how I can train myself to be aware of what I do even without the body, as in sleep?

M.: Awareness is your nature. In deep sleep or in waking, it is the same. How can it be gained afresh?

D.: But I do not remember what and how I did in my sleep. M.: Who says “I do not remember”?
D.: I say now.
M.: You were the same then; why do you not say so in sleep? D.: I do not remember what I say in sleep.
M.: You say, “I know, I remember”, in the wakeful state. This same personality says “I did not know - I did not remember in sleep”. Why does not this question arise in sleep?
D.: I do not know what happens in sleep. That is the reason I ask now.

M.: The question affects the sleeping phase and must be raised there. It does not affect the waking phase and there is no apparent reason for this question.

The fact is that you have no limitations in sleep and no question arises. Whereas now you put on limitations, identify yourself with the body and questions of this kind arise.

D.: I understand it, but do not realise it (i.e. unity in variety).
M.: Because you are in variety, you say you understand unity - that you have flashes, etc., remember things, etc.; you consider this variety to be real. On the other hand Unity is the reality, and the variety is false. The variety must go before unity reveals itself - its reality. It is always real. It does not send flashes of its being in this false variety. On the contrary, this variety obstructs the truth.

Then some others pursued the conversation.

M.: Removal of ignorance is the aim of practice, and not acquisition of Realisation. Realisation is ever present, here and now. Were it to be acquired anew, Realisation must be understood to be absent at one time and present at another time. In that case, it is not permanent, and therefore not worth the attempt. But Realisation is permanent and eternal and is here and now.

D.: Grace is necessary for the removal of ignorance.
M.: Certainly. But Grace is all along there. Grace is the Self. It is not something to be acquired. All that is necessary is to know its existence. For example, the sun is brightness only. He does not see darkness. Whereas others speak of darkness fleeing away on the sun approaching. Similarly, ignorance also is a phantom and not real. Because of its unreality, its unreal nature being found, it is said to be removed.
Again, the sun is there and also bright. You are surrounded by sunlight. Still if you would know the sun you must turn your eyes in his direction and look at him. So also Grace is found by practice alone although it is here and now.

D.: By the desire to surrender constantly, increasing Grace is experienced, I hope.
M.: Surrender once for all and be done with the desire. So long as the sense of doership is retained there is the desire; that is also personality. If this goes the Self is found to shine forth pure.

The sense of doership is the bondage and not the actions themselves.
“Be still and know that I am God.” Here stillness is total surrender without a vestige of individuality. Stillness will prevail and there will be no agitation of mind. Agitation of mind is the cause of desire, the sense of doership and personality. If that is stopped there is quiet. There ‘Knowing’ means ‘Being’. It is not the relative knowledge involving the triads, knowledge, subject and object.
D.: Is the thought “I am God” or “I am the Supreme Being” helpful?
M.: “I am that I am.” “I am” is God - not thinking, “I am God”. Realise “I am” and do not think I am. “Know I am God” - it is said, and not “Think I am God.”

Later Sri Bhagavan continued: It is said “I AM that I AM”. That means a person must abide as the ‘I’. He is always the ‘I’ alone. He is nothing else. Yet he asks “Who am I?” A victim of illusion would ask “Who am I?” and not a man fully aware of himself. The wrong identity of the Self with the non-self makes you ask, “Who am I?”

Later still: There are different routes to Tiruvannamalai, but Tiruvannamalai is the same by whichever route it is gained. Similarly the approach to the subject varies according to the personality. Yet the Self is the same. But still, being in Tiruvannamalai, if one asks for the route it is ridiculous. So also, being the Self, if one asks how to realise the Self it looks absurd. You are the Self. Remain as the Self. That is all. The questions arise because of the present wrong identification of the Self with the body. That is ignorance. This must go. On its removal the Self alone is.

Daily Practice - Mooji

 Inquiry #1: simply observing

How should we begin and proceed with the inquiry?

In the beginning, it will take some time to stabilise and merge the attention with the sense of conscious presence - the goal of inquiry. Be willing, at each attempt, to devote twenty or thirty minutes for this work. Start by holding on only to the sense of being or 'I am-self,' to the exclusion of other thoughts.

Thoughts and feelings will swim up and the attention will tend to drift off with them. Don't identify or fight with these tendencies, don't judge them. Adopt an impersonal attitude, by simply observing their play or movement without involvement, whilst holding onto or remaining as the intuition 'I am.' Watch the tendency to lapse into thinking. Hold onto being, only.

However many times the attention wanders off, keep bringing it back to presence. Don't begin the inquiry as yet. I call this stabilising or taming the wild-horse mind. Gradually, the mind, when denied the food of attention, belief and interest, will begin settling down by itself. There will then arise a feeling of increased space, clarity and peace as the attention stabilises, and the sense of presence becomes more pronounced. This is a state of natural stillness and joy; healthy being.

Inquiry #2: subjective existence

I have arrived at a stage of observation a number of times, but how to make it stable?
The inquiry hasn't yet begun. This is merely settling the mind and attention down. A good time to begin inquiring, initially, is when strong identification is present and much energy and attention tend to rush towards managing, manipulating or judging. These are the key signs that Presence, which is naturally impersonal, open, formless and clear, has shifted into ego-personality mode.

This shift is a sort of descent into a lower state and is often accompanied by sensations of restlessness in the beingness. Mostly, we have become so accustomed to this state of identification that we accept it as normal.
Now, as I have said earlier, as soon as the attention has merged with the presence 'I am,' natural peace and space prevail. Mind is calm. Find if there exists here any separation or difference between this calm and the sense 'I am,' the natural feeling of subjective existence.

Observe. Feel. Don't think.

Now, your question: How to stabilise in this state? Examine this question. Who is making the question? Who is here to stabilise anything and is there something to stabilise? Look and see.

Inquiry #3: don't form any conclusion
When I try to follow your instructions, what tends to happen is... my attention just flies off. I find it difficult to go deeper.

Yes. What sees the attention flying off? What or who says: "It is difficult to go deeper"? Find out for yourself. It is as though something resists this exploration, isn't it? Like something does not want to be found out, doesn't want to be seen or discovered. Forceful distraction comes up at this point, resulting in the attention flying off and mostly landing on trivia.

Gently return to the question each time the attention strays. Don't fall into: "Oh no! I've lost it again!" As well, do not accept any answer the mind gives - such as 'I am Awareness,' 'I am the Witness only.'
It may even seem that the 'problematic I,' the ego, suddenly vanishes, leaving a sense of calm and emptiness.
Mistakenly, the inquiry is then prematurely abandoned, leaving a false sense of victory. This being a false peace as often, the mischievous 'I' starts up again very quickly.

So the point here is: remain in the sense 'I am the witness,' but don't give any image or identity to this witnessing sense. Watch the sense 'I,' without thought. 'Feel' it out.

Stay with fixing the attention on this. Do not be hurried or put off the 'scent' of the 'I' by any distracting thought. Gradually, any personal quality attaching itself to the 'I' will begin falling away, leaving only the intuitive and imageless sense 'I am,' without the intrusion of the thought-current. Remain in this as this. Don't form any conclusion in mind. Stay as open, neutral non-objective awareness.

Inquiry #4: confirm yourself

I see that this is easy now, here, with the help of your guidance and presence but when my mind rushes up again and you are not here to guide my attention, the same struggle will arise.
That's like space having mistakenly identified itself as wind, and then realising it is not wind, but that in which wind moves - and then asking: "I see now, I am space only and not wind, how can I remain as space when the wind comes again?"

You are to remain so fixed in the Self, as to confirm yourself as the Awareness-presence alone, that the thought 'I am the body-mind-personality' has no holding ground. When, like this, the consciousness recognises, registers and experiences this truth of itself beyond doubt, the ego with all its limitations is driven off. And it will be so weakened through this direct seeing, that even though it returns through the force of habit, its power is severely reduced each time. Gradually, it perishes in that form, from what I call 'the lack of oxygen,' meaning you deny interest and belief. It becomes like a cooked seed, unable to sprout even if planted in the best soil.
